The newest student generation, sometimes called “New Millennial Learners,” is growing up surrounded by digital media and technologies. For them, the ability to access information and communication technologies is increasingly important to effectively participate in the economic, political, and social aspects of what is becoming known as the “knowledge society”

What are digital literacies?

There are many ways of defining digital literacy. Key aspects include:

  • Information literacy: the capacity to access and evaluate information, and to use and manage it;
  • Media literacy: the ability to analyze media and to create media products; and,
  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) literacy: the ability to apply technology effectively

Why are digital literacy and digital citizenship increasingly important?

In a technology-driven society and globalized world, preparing our students for success involves a focus on important skills such as digital literacy and citizenship. At Peak we strongly believe that with being digitally literate comes the necessity to help students develop the skills of safe, responsible digital citizenship. Students need an understanding of potential social issues related to technology, and practice legal and ethical behaviour. At Peak we strive to help our students to learn how to ensure that the ‘digital footprint’ they leave behind reinforces the positive relationships they are trying to achieve.
